Overview of Local Programs

All trainings are led by John Abraham,
M. Div., Thanatologist (expert on end of life), author of
“How To Get the Death You Want - A Practical and Moral Guide,” and member of our Board of Directors.

NEW PROGRAM: THE IMPACT OF A GOOD DEATH: This program will be based on the experiences of Tucson members who have dealt with the planned exit of loved ones. Not intended as grief counseling, this new program will help those considering their own final exit to understand the impact of that choice and how best to remediate the pain that such a decision will inevitably create for others.

DEATH WITH DIGNITY: AN INTRODUCTION TO CHOICE AND DIGNITY: Introduction to the death-with-dignity movement and local programs. Given at libraries, civic groups, community associations, churches, etc.

SMALL-GROUP SOCIAL GATHERINGS: A get-together to share end-of-life interests with like-minded people in a safe and informal environment. A place to get to know others and perhaps find someone to act as your medical power of attorney. Open to the public.

ADVOCACY TRAINING: Learn how to get your wishes honored at the end of life or whenever encountering a medical institution, how to get the care you want, and how to avoid medical care you don't want. Find out how to have or to be a good medical power of attorney and how to make your advance directives work for you. This is our most well-received program. Open to the public. Required before attending the Advance Directives Workshop.

ADVANCE DIRECTIVES WORKSHOP: A helpful follow-up to the Advocacy Training. Learn how to prepare advance directives that clearly state your end-of-life and medical-care wishes. A lawyer is present to answer questions. Arizona-specific forms, which can be found at azag.gov and include the Life Care Planning Packet, will be available. Must have attended Advocacy Training. Open to the public.

LIFE COMPLETION CLASS: This class will teach two “how to” ways to facilitate a peaceful death, including a demonstration of the inert gas method, and will discuss why not to use other methods. The role of "Exit Guides" also will be addressed. Open only to Choice and Dignity members.

THE IMPACT OF A GOOD DEATH: Learn about the experiences of Tucson members who have dealt with the planned exit of loved ones. Not intended as grief counseling, this new program will help those considering their own final exit to understand the impact of that choice, and how best to remediate the pain that such a decision may inevitably create for others.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETINGS: Directors meet regularly to evaluate, refine, and schedule our programs. Open to the public.

SPEAKERS: We have world-renowned speakers, including Derek Humphry, author of Final Exit; the president of the World Federation of Right To Die Societies; the president of the Final Exit Network; and Dr. Richard MacDonald, who has been present at over 200 exits.

MEETUP GROUP: Most meetings are posted at https://www.meetup.com/DeathWithDignity/. It’s free for anyone to join Meetup.com
