Legal Resources:
While you do not need an attorney to complete advance directives documents, it may be helpful in some situations to work with an attorney if there are more complex family dynamics and estates concerns.

Compassion and Choices Legal Helpline
When you have a legal question about end-of-life issues, who will you call?
We hope you’ll reach out to Compassion Legal’s helpline, which is completely free of charge.
End-of-life planning and care comes with many questions, especially when it comes to navigating complex legal systems. From what to do if your end-of-life decisions are not being respected, to whether medical aid in dying is an option for you, Call Compassion Legal is here to offer you support.
When you call 800-247-7421, you’re directed to our legal intake line, where one of our knowledgeable Compassion Legal team members listens to your end-of-life legal concerns. Then, we respond.
Sometimes the solution is to file a lawsuit: You’ve heard us share in recent weeks about pregnancy exclusion cases and residency requirements, as well as a lawsuit to uphold an advance directive.
However, much of the work we do for you — again, free of charge — does not involve filing lawsuits.
Examples of work that Compassion Legal has done for supporters like you:
Provided a patient with guidance on how to speak with their medical provider about deactivating a pacemaker that was causing pain and no longer serving their health needs.
Assisted a family in navigating a dementia diagnosis and end-of-life care without advance planning documents in place.
Provided resources and support for terminally ill people planning to travel to Oregon or Vermont to access medical aid in dying.
Favorably resolved a dispute with a private board and care facility that evicted a dying person for exercising their right to access medical aid in dying.
Of course, we can’t help you if we don’t know what you need. So please take this as your invitation to Call Compassion Legal when you have legal questions about the end of life. We’re the nation’s first nonprofit law firm dedicated solely to advancing patient rights at the end of life, and we’re funded nearly 100% by supporters like you.
